A video may be the greatest edited video in the world, but that doesn’t matter if nobody is going to see or share it. These are some of the videos I oversaw the production of while running the Tech Insider and Chicago Insider video teams. One lesson I learned along the way was if a video “answered questions people didn’t know they had,” it was likely to perform very well.
These are some of those videos.

Why US Bathrooms Don't Have Bidets (Copy)
This is one of my all-time favorite Tech Insider videos. The team was discussing how ubiquitous bidets are around the world. When I realized how enthusiastic we were about the discussion, I knew there was a story there. This video is the result. We were not the only ones enthused, as this video has gone on to have over 4 million views on YouTube.

Why Plane Tires Don't Explode On Landing (Copy)
This video was produced by a fellow on the Tech Insider video team. It involved interviewing experts at Goodyear, who also provided footage for us to use. With almost 4 million views, this video is just one giant “fun fact” that viewers can share with seatmates on their next flight.

Why NASA Spews Out Half A Million Gallons Of Water During Rocket Launches (Copy)
When I was running Tech Insider, I would check NASA’s various YouTube channels almost every day. They are a treasure trove of incredible footage. When I saw this video, I knew the “giant fountain” would intrigue our audience and they would be likely to enjoy it. I assigned the video to a producer, who turned around a fantastic edit explaining why NASA does this for their launches.

Why Apple's 'Trash Can' Was A Colossal Failure (Copy)
This computer has become the bane of video professionals everywhere. The inability to upgrade it made it obsolete almost from its initial release.
The team was discussing how much we hated our “trash cans,” when I realized there was a video there. We interviewed Insider’s own IT person for their perspective and conducted a photo shoot just for that thumbnail. It was a labor of love for something we had all come to hate.

How 10 Million Vaccine Doses A Day Could Be Shipped From Chicago O'hare Airport | Big Business (Copy)
In the late summer of 2020, I learned that the Covid-19 vaccines would require extremely cold storage, necessitating special shipping needs. When I learned Lufthansa’s facility at O’Hare Airport already handled some pharmaceuticals, I reached out to see if we could tour the facility and do a feature on it. They were more than accomodating, and we had this video live on all platforms just as the vaccines were beginning to be distributed.
